夜鹭属（学名：Nycticorax），是鹈形目鹭科中的一个属。[2]本属鸟类为中等体型、颈短、腿短、体型粗壮的鸟类，分布于世界各地并曾入住各个岛屿，但岛屿型物种容易遭到人类活动影响而绝灭。[2][3]现共有6个物种，而其中4个物种已经绝灭。[2]
命名历史[编辑]
本属由英国鸟类学家托马斯·伊格内修斯·玛丽亚·福斯特于1817年进行了有效的描述。[4]其模式种现根据重名关系指定为Nycticorax infaustus，即瑞典博物学家卡尔·林奈所命名的夜鹭。[1]
其属名Nycticorax即来自于夜鹭的种加词，而该词来自古希腊语，亚里士多德及赫西丘斯皆曾提及的νυκτικόραξ（罗马化：nuktikorax，“夜鸦”之意），这种鸟类被认为会带来厄运，可能指的是猫头鹰。[5][6]1555年，这个词首先由瑞典博物学家康拉德·格斯纳用以指称夜鹭。[5]
