1957年，巴雷特畢業於哥倫比亞大學整形外科學院，並在1961年完成精神病學的駐院實習。1967年至1968年，他在位於芝加哥的拉薩爾擴展大學（英語：La Salle Extension University）學習了美國法律及程序的函授課程[3]。之後他擔任從業醫生，直至1993年退休[4]。之後他離開賓夕法尼亞州艾倫鎮，遷居至北卡羅萊納州教堂山[5]。
