索引服務（Indexing Service，舊稱Index Server）是一個維護文件索引的Windows服務，它可以維護計算機上的大部分文件以改善搜索計算機和企業計算機網絡的性能，並且更新索引無需用戶介入。在Windows 7中，它被新的Windows搜索索引器取代。另外，有IFilter插件可以擴展索引能力以支持更多文件格式，並且協議兼容舊版索引服務與新版Windows搜索的索引器。

索引服務是作為一個桌面搜索服務在Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack^[1]和Windows 2000及之後的版本中提供。^[5]，那時它作為微軟服務器軟件IIS的內容搜索系統。它的起源最早可追溯到微軟的Cairo操作系統項目，那時它作為對象文件系統的內容索引器。Cairo項目最後被放棄，但內容索引功能成為了之後的Windows桌面和服務器操作系統的組件。例如在Windows 2000中，其搭載了索引服務3.0。

在Windows Vista中，內容索引服務被默認啟用的Windows搜索索引器取代。索引服務在Windows Server 2008中仍然存在，但不會默認安裝與運行。^[4]

索引服務在Windows 7和Windows Server 2008 R2中就已被棄用。^[6]並在Windows 8中被移除。

搜索界面[編輯]

在初步建立索引後可進行全面的搜索。建立索引可能花費幾小時乃至幾天，這取決於特定目錄的大小、硬盤速度、用戶活動、索引器設置和其他因素。使用索引服務搜索時也可使用UNC路徑和映射的網絡驅動器，如果共享服務器索引了適當的目錄並且意識到正在共享。

在索引服務被打開並建立適當的索引後，可以多個方面用它搜索：Windows任務欄的開始菜單在索引服務可用時會使用它搜索，甚至接受複雜的查詢。在微軟管理控制台的「計算機管理」擴展的「服務查詢表單」中可以用它執行查詢。以及，第三方應用程序（例如「Aim at File」和「Grokker Desktop」）可以使用它。

Microsoft Index Server 2.0不檢測處在掛載分區中的目錄的變更。由於文件系統的技術原因，它不支持掛載的卷。^[7]
