英國電影協會是1933年英國成立的慈善組織，「對影視文化貢獻突出」者可獲會士頭銜，是該機構的最高榮譽，[1]英國演員尊·赫就稱該獎是「世間最高榮譽」[2]。

1983年是英國電影協會50周年和英國電影協會國家檔案館25周年，協會首度頒發會士頭銜，截至2020年共有87名會士[3]。獎項不一定每年頒發但頒獎典禮均在倫敦舉辦，有時是倫敦影展時在國家電影院授獎[2]。首屆頒獎典禮共授予六人會士頭銜，分別是法國導演馬賽爾·卡爾內，英國導演大衛·利恩、麥可·鮑爾，匈牙利編劇艾默利·普萊斯柏格，印度電影人薩蒂亞吉特·雷伊，美國導演兼演員奧森·威爾斯。最近獲獎的阿曼達·內維爾（Amanda Nevill）長期擔任協會首席執行官。[4]哈維·溫斯坦曾於2002年獲得會士頭銜，但在2017年因大量性騷擾或性侵指控剝奪故未統計在內[5]。

英國電影協會共授予88人會士頭銜，其中英國人59名，剩下的29人大多來自英國或法國。非洲入選的兩人都是導演，分別是馬里人蘇萊曼·西塞和塞內加爾人烏斯曼·塞姆班，另外日本、印度、蘇聯、加拿大、澳大利亞、奧地利、愛爾蘭各一人。
