約瑟夫·愛默生·伍斯特（Joseph Emerson Worcester，1784年8月24日—1865年10月27日），19世紀中期美國辭典編纂者，韋氏詞典的主要競爭人。

伍斯特於1784年8月24日生於新罕布殊爾州貝德福德，小時候在農場工作，十四歲上學。1809年他進入耶魯大學學習並於兩年後畢業。此後他在馬薩諸塞州的中學任教數年，其間他寫了幾本地理方面的書籍，包括1817年的《古今地名辭典》。他還編寫了一部常用的歷史課本《古今歷史元素及歷史地圖》，出版於1827年。

他編撰的第一部字典是刪節版的塞繆爾·約翰遜的《英語詞典》，與韋氏字典同樣於1828年出版。他曾為韋氏工作過，並編寫了1929年出版的縮編本《美國英語詞典》。與韋氏不同的是，他反對拼寫改革，並使用倫敦口音作為發音標準。

1830年他出版了自己的《英語綜合發音與釋義詞典》，這本詞典引發了他剽竊韋氏詞典的指責，伍斯特則辯解說這是他自己研究的成果，早在為韋氏工作之前他已開始為編寫這部詞典做準備。這通常被稱為"字典之戰"，兩人之間的競爭和論戰一直持續到1843年韋伯斯特去世，後來韋伯斯特的後繼者G.&C.梅里亞姆公司買下韋氏字典的版權。

1946年他將自己的字典改良成為《英語通用校勘詞典》。1860年他出版了最後的作品《英語詞典》，曾在短期內成為美國詞典的主流，直到1864年新版《韋氏英語詞典》的出版。伍斯特的詞典是首先通篇使用插圖的美國詞典，並加入了近義詞元素——這一傳統後來被大多數詞典沿用。在他去世以後，1886年他的詞典被改良。但在1890年版《韋氏國際詞典》和其他19世紀九十年代的詞典的對比下黯然失色，在世紀之交之前就停止付印了。
