畢蘇語群屬於漢藏語系南部彝語哈尼語支。大多數畢蘇語群語言分佈在老撾北部豐沙里省和中國(雲南、越南萊州省、緬甸撣邦和泰國北部。

大衛·布拉德利 (2007)[2]:349-424認為下列畢蘇語方言關係密切。
- 畢蘇語: 泰國北部500民族人口，還有其他地區少數使用者
- 片語：1900年已是行將滅亡，並被拉祜語替代
- 老緬語：4千人(5千民族人口之外)在瀾滄拉祜族自治縣中部
- 老品語：少於1千人(1300民族人口之外)於勐海縣
