长期以来，加利福尼亚州维塞利亚一直被警方怀疑是金州杀手的犯罪训练场[6][7][8][9][10]。1974年4月至1975年12月的大规模的犯罪活动中，劫掠者据信是造成一宗谋杀和100多宗盗窃的罪魁祸首。他闯入民宅，破坏财物，散布女性内衣及窃取低价值的物品，同时往往忽视纸币和价值较高的物品。

之后金州杀手惯以蒙面在半夜清晨闯入女性家中，用绳结捆绑被害人后加以性侵、强盗，并会以手枪威胁被害者生命。从1976年开始几乎每个月都会发生数起同样手法的案件，至1979年间至少就有将近50名妇女惨遭强暴。当时的连环事件集中在加州萨克拉门托（Sacramento）东部地区，而被称之为“东区强暴魔”（East Area Rapist），被害人年龄从13岁到41岁。

1977年左右，金州杀手的犯案目标从落单女性变成夫妇，凶手侵入民宅后会用手电筒叫醒熟睡中的夫妇，以绳索捆绑被害人后，会当着丈夫的面前性侵其妻子，并且在丈夫背上堆叠餐盘，只要听到餐盘摔落的声音就会杀害全家；在其连环犯行中，也有年轻夫妇惨遭杀害。

这一系列暗夜性侵杀人事件，在1978年左右开始被称之为“暗夜尾行者”（NightStalker）。但经过一年多的连续犯案，都因为线索不够充分而难以追缉真凶，犯案地点也从沙加缅度扩及加州南部、旧金山湾区东部及东南部的多个城市。

1986年，金州杀手将18岁女孩克鲁兹（Janelle Cruz）性侵之后杀死，之后就销声匿迹，是他最后一次犯案。

2016年6月15日，美国联邦调查局悬赏5万美元，向社会大众征求破案线索[11]。

2018年4月25日，美国加州萨克拉门托警局经DNA调查比对后，查出真凶为现年72岁的前警察约瑟夫·詹姆斯·迪安杰洛（Joseph James DeAngelo）[12][13][14][15][16][17]但是，由于加利福尼亚州法律，2017年之前强奸案有消灭时效[18]，现在不能以1970年代后期强奸罪来起诉犯人[19]。

2020年6月29日，报导指出约瑟夫首度认罪。[20]检方指控其作案范围横跨加州11个郡，累计有53个犯罪现场，受害者人数达87人[5]。

约瑟夫·詹姆斯·迪安杰洛（Joseph James DeAngelo）在1945年11月8日出生于纽约州巴斯镇，父亲是美国陆军中士[21]，他有两个妹妹，一个弟弟。一位亲戚表示，迪安杰洛在9岁或10岁的时候，他家随父亲驻扎在西德，他曾目睹7岁的妹妹在一间仓库里被两名飞行员轮暴[22]。1959到1960年间，他在加州科多瓦牧场就读中学，1961年开始在加州佛森读高中，1964年获GED普通教育文凭。曾在学校参加初级棒球校队[23][24]。1964年9月加入美国海军[25]，越战期间在堪培拉号重巡洋舰[26]和皮埃蒙特号驱逐舰[27]上服役22个月，担任损害控制员。1968年8月，迪安杰洛回国就读加州罗克林市的谢拉学院（Sierra College），他以优异的成绩毕业，获得警察科学的副学士学位[28]。1970年5月，他与谢拉学院的同学邦妮·珍·柯威尔（Bonnie Jean Colwell）订婚，后来断绝关系。调查人员认为，某次袭击中凶手曾骂出“我恨你，邦妮！”两者之间可能有所关联[29][30]。1971年就读沙加缅度州立大学，获刑事司法学士学位[24][25]，后来在维塞利亚红杉学院（College of the Sequoias）修习研究生课程，以及进一步的警察培训[25]，最后在罗斯维尔警察局完成为期32周的警员实习[31]。
